What’s a Grant of Probate?
A Grant of Probate is the legal certificate that gives you the authority to deal with a deceased person’s affairs in accordance with their will. If you’ve been nominated as an executor in a will, you’ll need to apply for Grant of Probate from a court’s probate registry.
If the deceased person hasn’t left a will, a close relative can apply for a grant of letters of administration from the probate registry. Like a Grant of Probate, this is a legal document giving them authority to deal with the deceased person’s assets.
